Took a late decision to cancel my entry at my own club (Willow Valley) as I’d noticed that there was an Open up at Halifax GC. My lad didn’t have any plans to golf yesterday (Saturday the 6th), and with Halifax being one of his favourite courses I knew he’d be up for a round with me – £25 they charge – it is an absolute bargain to play a golf course that’s worthy of much stronger green fees.
Jamie made a fairly steady start through the 1st few holes – which are the more challenging ones on the course, then pulled his tee shot on the 6th into some thick stuff – found it but could only chop it further into the cabbage – finished up with no points on the hole which is frustrating for him as his index doesn’t really allow for too many doubles and triples – with it being Stableford I said to him as we walked off the green “a couple of birdies sorts that out”.

No prizes for guessing what happened on the par 3 7th. 8 iron, just on a line to the right side of the pin, pitches at the top of the slope on the MacKenzie green, then makes it’s way towards the hole before disappearing. Total joy on the tee box, and cheers from the lads on the 6th green as we bounced around celebrating.

Had to wipe a tear away as we walked off the green – my dad, and Jamie’s Grandad passed away 4 weeks earlier – I’ve so many great memories myself of playing golf with him as a kid, and I’ve done everything I can to give Jamie the same experiences. Yesterday, I got to witness the ultimate one but so wished I could have seen the smile on my dads face if we’d been able to call round to tell him one more golfing story – maybe he was watching on from above high on those hills above Halifax.

That’s awesome. Golf’s a funny old game as they say…

Graham that’s a lovely story and one I’m sure he will pass on to his kids.
